Steps
-
Step 1:
To make sushi rolls, pat out some rice.
-
Step 2:
Lay a nori sheet on the mat, shiny-side down.
-
Step 3:
Dip your hands in the vinegared water, then pat handfuls of rice on top in a 1cm-thick layer, leaving the edge furthest from you clear.
-
Step 4:
Spread a thin layer of Japanese mayonnaise down the middle of the rice using a spoon.
-
Step 5:
Top the mayonnaise with a line of your favourite fillings; tuna and cucumber are used here.
-
Step 6:
Lift the edge of the mat over the rice, applying a little pressure to keep everything in a tight roll.
-
Step 7:
When you reach the edge without rice, brush it with a little water and continue rolling into a tight roll.
-
Step 8:
Remove the mat and wrap the roll tightly in cling film.
-
Step 9:
Have an adult cut the sushi into thick slices, then unwrap the cling film.
-
Step 10:
To make pressed sushi, line a loaf tin with cling film and place a thin layer of smoked salmon inside on top of the cling film.
-
Step 11:
Press about 3cm of rice over the fish, fold the cling film over, and press down as much as possible, using another tin if available.
-
Step 12:
Turn the sushi block onto a chopping board. Have an adult cut it into fingers, then remove the cling film.
-
Step 13:
To make sushi balls, place a topping such as half a prawn or a small piece of smoked salmon on a small square of cling film.
-
Step 14:
Using damp hands, roll walnut-sized balls of rice and place them on the topping.
-
Step 15:
Bring the corners of the cling film together and tighten into balls by twisting, then unwrap and serve.
